Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby excitement may unfold but once each spring, but Louisville shopping runs strong throughout the year. Rodes, dressing men and women in bluegrass style since 1914, anchors the corner of Fourth Avenue in the Starks building, with across-the-street parking at the Seelbach Hilton. Muth's Candies, sweetening up downtown since 1921, supplies fine bourbon chocolates. Kentucky Museum of Art & Craft, on Main Street, features more than 400 artists with exhibits, workshops, and a gift shop. Bardstown Road and Frankfort Avenue are filled with antique shops, boutiques, and galleries, plus the Bardstown Road Farmers Market, with flowers, produce, and more providing Saturday morning adventure.

Derby City Antique Mall & Café features more than 100 dealers, a Victorian café and tea room. Meijer, with a half dozen locations, serves as a premier one-stop supermarket for toys, electronics, home, and outdoor living. Jefferson Mall, anchored by Dillard's, Lazarus, JCPenney, and Sears on the outer loop near the airport, has more than 100 stores from American Eagle to Gadzooks, and Zales. Mall St. Matthews, on Shelbyville Road, has Dillard's, JCPenney, and nearly 150 specialty retailers including Brooks Brothers, Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn.

The renovated Oxmoor Center, also on Shelbyville Road, features Macy's, Von Maur, Sears, Dick's Sporting Goods, and more than 100 smaller specialty stores. Across the Ohio River on the Indiana side, Hoosier communities of Jeffersonville, New Albany, and Clarksville also draw shoppers. About four miles from downtown Louisville, Green Tree Mall, anchored by Dillard's, JCPenney, Sears, and Target, has more than 100 shops including Body Central, Kentucky Korner, and Razz MaTazz . Also in Clarksville, Enro Shirt Factory, an authentic factory outlet, supplies fine dress shirts and casual wear in regular, big and tall sizes.
